Monkey Island · Volume 4 of 4Return to Monkey Island - The Complete 100% Walkthrough

All 39 Steam achievements in two playthroughs. The first is a Hard-mode run with Writer's Cut on, walked step by step through the Prelude and Parts I-V, with every achievement placed at the step where it unlocks and a warning before each of the 27 missables closes. The second is a Casual run with Writer's Cut off, under two hours, for Speed Runner. Hard is not optional: Promise Keeper and Flag Facsimile cannot be earned on Casual. Written for the Steam version (AppID 2060130) as of its February 2023 build; no update has changed the achievement list.

1. What "100%" Means in Return to Monkey Island

Return to Monkey Island (Terrible Toybox, 2022, published by Devolver Digital) sends Guybrush after the Secret of Monkey Island again: a short Prelude at the Big Whoop amusement park, then five Parts that run from Mêlée Island, through a stint on LeChuck's ship, to Monkey Island and then out across a handful of other islands. It is a point-and-click adventure, so every achievement is either a story milestone, a side gag hidden in a puzzle chain, or a long-haul goal.

Everything on the 39-achievement Steam list (10 of them hidden) falls into five groups:

Warning. Start your first run on Hard, with Writer's Cut ON in the settings. Difficulty is chosen at New Game and cannot be changed once the game has begun. On Casual the museum closes after the first theft, so Promise Keeper cannot be earned there. Flag Facsimile is also unavailable on Casual; the source does not say why. 27 of the 39 achievements can be missed: each one gets a Warning in the walkthrough before its point of no return.

Spoiler policy

Each Part gets one line of setup, not a retelling. The walkthrough gives route-level solutions, enough to place every achievement and get through each puzzle chain, but the sources do not say where a handful of items come from (§17 lists them). It stops short of describing the ending. The two achievements tied to the final Part sit under their own spoiler heading at the end of §6.

2. How to Use This Guide

The game splits into six chapters: the Prelude and Parts I to V. Each one below has:

  1. A count strip: achievements earned there, how many are missable, and the setting.
  2. A line of setup.
  3. A numbered solution list in route order. Achievement callouts sit inside the step where the achievement unlocks, and a Warning sits before every point of no return. SAVE in bold marks a manual save you should make.

The achievement tables in §6 are the checklist: tick a row's box as each one unlocks. Progress is saved in your browser, per guide.

    H --> Z(["39 of 39 achievements"])

One careful Hard run with five save points, a return to a kept Part IV save after the credits, then a short Casual run against the clock.

Why this order?

  1. Hard first, because it is required. Promise Keeper and Flag Facsimile exist only on Hard, and the mode is locked at New Game. Hard covers everything Casual offers, so the Hard run and its post-game cover 38 of the 39.
  2. Writer's Cut on for the long run, off for the short one. Writer's Cut adds dialogue, including the chance to meet the old pirate leaders in Part I, one of the candidates for the 15th Bragging name. In the speed run the same extra dialogue only costs time.
  3. Cogg Island needs a finished game. In your first run the Cogg card has no correct answer. Once the credits have rolled, the card on an earlier save shows a real coordinate, so you keep a Part IV save with the blowfish and the sea map for exactly this.
  4. Trivia carries across everything. Answer cards from the first scene of Part I; whatever is left over can be farmed on any Part I-IV save afterwards.
  5. Speed Runner last. By then you know every solution, and Casual's shorter puzzle chains make two hours comfortable.

4. Mechanics Worth Knowing Before You Start

Tip. All of this takes time. TrueSteamAchievements puts the full list at 20-25 hours. Steam forum users report 10-15 hours for a first playthrough, the speed run takes 1.5-2 hours, and the trivia grind is open-ended because cards only refill as time passes.

5. The Master Checklist

Route order. Missable counts the achievements that close for good in that chapter. Saves counts the manual saves this guide asks for there. Each Part achievement is counted in the chapter whose final step triggers it, so Part One sits in the Prelude's row, Part Two in Part I's, and so on. Tight Ship is counted in Part III, where you do the work, although it unlocks with Part Four as Part IV begins.

7. Prelude - An Unexpected Story Begins

Achievements: 3 (2 missable) · Prelude · Big Whoop amusement park

A short opening at the Big Whoop amusement park. Both of its achievements are lost the moment you go through the gate.

  1. Talk to Chuckie. In the Scurvydog Shack, take the pegleg that holds the outhouse key off its hook.
  2. Unlock the outhouse and pick up the slug, a fake coin. Go back to the shack and hang the pegleg on its hook again.

Achievement - Pegleg. Unlocks as the pegleg goes back on the hook. KosGames reports that returning it without having taken the slug does not count, so take the slug first.

  3. Trade the slug for Scurvydogs.

  4. Go through the archway and work through what Dee asks of you: the race, bread for the duck, ketchup on the Scurvydog and sword practice.
  5. Once Dee has updated your to-do list, read the sign by the grassy patch on the right of the park. Hold Tab to highlight the four-leaf clover, take it and use it on the duck in the pond.

Achievement - Lucky Duck. Unlocks when the duck gets the clover.

  6. Throw your coin into the wishing well.

Warning. The gate is the Prelude's point of no return: Chuckie tells you there is no coming back. Make sure Pegleg and Lucky Duck have both unlocked before you walk through.

  7. Go through the gate and talk to Dad. The Prelude ends.

Achievement - Part One. Unlocks as Part I begins.

8. Part I - A Friendly Place

Achievements: 7 (6 missable) · Part I · Mêlée Island

Guybrush is back on Mêlée Island needing a ship, and the way to sea runs through LeChuck's quartermaster. Six side goals live here, and every one of them (Bragging aside) closes when you are hired.

Warning. Bragging runs through the whole Part. Whenever a character offers the line about looking for the Secret of Monkey Island, take it the first time: for some characters, the Voodoo Lady among them, it does not come back. The numbers in brackets below follow Walkthrough King's Hard + Writer's Cut route to 15. Trivia cards start spawning now too; answer each one as you find it (§13 lists the Mêlée spawn spots).

  1. Lookout: tell him you are looking for the Secret (Bragging 1/15).
  2. Docks: read the poster. Its line is the first of two clues for the apology in step 16; it is randomised, so note what yours says.
  3. Scumm Bar: tell the new pirate leaders about the Secret (2/15). Leave, come back in and tell the three pirates by the entrance (5/15; TrueSteamAchievements counts them as pirate 1, pirate 2 and the group). Read the job board on the jetty and talk to the quartermaster, who tells you that you are blacklisted.
  4. Low Street: talk to Elaine, then read the plaque under the statue. That is the second apology clue, also randomised.
  5. International House of Mojo: tell the Voodoo Lady about the Secret the first time the line appears (6/15). Take the hint book and the disguise bag. Buy the knife, the forgiveness frog and the shrunken head (mop head 1 of 4 for Mop Top).
  6. Wally's Maps-n-More (Low Street, open after the quartermaster scene): tell Wally about the Secret (7/15). Examine all 18 maps, then everything else in the shop as well: the globe, the cartography tools and the medal above the door. Take the monocle.

Achievement - Cartography Nerd. Unlocks once you have examined enough of the stock. Sources describe the target differently (the 18 maps, which the PS5 progress counter confirms, or "every item in the store"), so examine everything and you are covered either way.

  7. Outside Wally's: tell the men of low moral fiber (8/15, per Walkthrough King).

  8. High Street, Locke Smith's shop: read the copy of "At The End Of The Plank" on the right side of the shop (Bookworm 1/5). Tell Locke about the Secret (9/15) and ask him about keys.
  9. Jail: tell Otis (10/15). Use the monocle on his cell lock to read the serial number. Tell Stan (11/15).
  10. Take the serial to Locke Smith for a key, then go back and unlock Otis's cell.

Achievement - Hey Wait! Unlocks when the cell opens.

  11. Governor's Mansion: sword-fight Carla. During the fight, mention your project, then the Secret (12/15). Take the stuffed animal (the "puppy doll", mop head 2 of 4). Read the copy of "At The End Of The Plank" in the bookcase (Bookworm 2/5).

  12. Scumm Bar: Cobb turns up here once you have spoken to the Voodoo Lady. Tell him about the Secret (13/15), then keep pushing him about LOOM: "Tell me about LOOM." / "Then why don't you take off the 'Ask Me About Loom' button?" / "Oh, come on. Tell me about Loom. For old times' sake." / "Say It!" / "Saaayyyy it!"

Achievement - Fan Service. Unlocks when Cobb finally gives in.

  13. Take the Trivia Book from the table near the entrance, by the drinking pirates, and answer the card that comes with it (KosGames: page 1, question 6). Walkthrough King picks it up at this point in the route; take it earlier if you see it.

  14. Kitchen: tell the cook about the Secret (14/15) and ask him about mops. Take the string from the end of the jetty behind the kitchen (mop head 3 of 4).
  15. Leave the Scumm Bar and come back so the fancy customer, Marlon Marlin, is sitting at the white table. Ask Wally about the mop-handle tree.
  16. Governor's Mansion: read the "Ingredients" cookbook. Write the apology on the forgiveness frog. On Hard it is built from five lines: "Dear Carla," / "Sorry for losing the book I borrowed." / the line from the Docks poster / the line from the Low Street plaque / "You scare the heck out of me". Give Carla the frog and borrow "Ingredients".
  17. Scumm Bar kitchen: give the cook the book. While he cooks, take his mop and try to walk out of the bar. He catches you. TrueSteamAchievements notes the fancy customer has to be in the bar for this to work.

Achievement - Mop Heist. Unlocks when the cook stops you.

  18. Use the knife on the mop to cut a sliver of wood. At Wally's, get the second monocle, then give him the sliver for the forest map.

  19. Shipyard: take the sea sponge by Stan's boarded-up shop (mop head 4 of 4).
  20. Forest: on Hard the dotted lines on the map are a red herring. At each exit, follow the plant icon instead (purple flower, mushroom or carnivorous plant). Use the knife on a carnivorous plant (the "bite of a thousand needles"), then on the mop tree to cut the mop handle.

Warning. Do not put a head on the mop handle. A head cannot be swapped once it is attached, and Mop Top needs a bare handle in the save you make at step 24.

  21. Museum of Pirate Lore: tell Conrad Lee about the Secret (15/15).

Achievement - Bragging. Unlocks at the 15th person. Sources disagree on one name: TrueSteamAchievements and TheGamer count the old pirate leaders, who appear on the street in Part I only with Writer's Cut on, while Walkthrough King reaches 15 with the men of low moral fiber outside Wally's instead. Whether they are the same group is unconfirmed, so tell both. Still short? Part IV is a second chance: the old pirate leaders can be met then even without Writer's Cut, and the pirates in the fish shop count too.

Then use the double monocle on the display-case lock to read its serial, and take the cracker mix from the storeroom.

  22. Locke Smith: he makes the display-case key, and you come away with stale crackers as well.

  23. Museum: give a cracker to the parrot and steal the eyepatch. At the Voodoo Lady's, combine the eyepatch with the carnivorous plant to make the enchanted eyepatch.
  24. LeChuck's pier: go behind the crates and use the enchanted eyepatch as your disguise. The quartermaster tells you to come back with a mop of your own.

Warning. Getting hired ends Part I, and with it Fan Service, Cartography Nerd, Hey Wait!, Mop Heist and Mop Top, plus Bragging until Part IV. Check they have all unlocked. Then SAVE here, with all four mop heads and the bare handle in your inventory: string, sea sponge, stuffed animal and shrunken head.

  25. Make the mop with the string, show it to the quartermaster, Iron Rose, and get hired. Reload the save and repeat with the sea sponge, then the stuffed animal, then the shrunken head.

Achievement - Mop Top / Part Two. Mop Top unlocks on the fourth hire, and Part Two follows as the new Part begins. Do not reload this time: carry straight on.

9. Part II - A Dangerous Journey

Achievements: 5 (4 missable) · Part II · LeChuck's ship

Guybrush starts at the bottom of LeChuck's crew, swabbing the hold of LeShip, and has to work his way up. This Part also holds the setup for Free Wally, which is easy to walk straight past.

Warning. Super Swabbie is missable. Do the swabbing below before anything else.

  1. The hold: open the crate (Murray is inside), and take the pamphlet, the ghost chicken feed and the mop. Swab the grease 20 times; the first swab keeps spilling it again, so just keep mopping.

Achievement - Super Swabbie. Unlocks on the 20th swab.

  2. Spread one grease spot somewhere else in the hold: it is a mess you report later for Neat Freak. Put it on the chickens' feed. TrueSteamAchievements reports that grease on the chicken-feed barrel or the kitbag counts, and a gameplay.tips commenter says grease left on the floor disappears.

  3. The porthole (screwed shut on Hard): swab the 3 screws, knife them out, grease the porthole three times and squeeze out through it.
  4. Once you are out: SAVE. Climb down to the rudder and do nothing. Let the 8-minute air timer run out, then the 6-minute one, then the 4-minute one, and Guybrush dies for real.

Achievement - Dead Dead Dead. Unlocks on the final drowning. Reload the save afterwards. A gameplay.tips guide describes a different trigger, switching between two screens until you have died three times; try that if waiting it out does not work for you. Patch 1.3.5 fixed a breather timer that ran incorrectly. If it still fails, TrueSteamAchievements lists later chances in Part III (at the start and under the ship) and Part IV (under the ship, or in the Terror Island cave).

  5. Climb the railing. On the top deck at the bow, by the empty potion boxes near the ladder, there are manacles with no normal hotspot. Hover the double monocle over them to reveal one, and write down the serial number.

Warning. This serial is Free Wally. Part II is the safe window; later windows are disputed (TrueSteamAchievements says Part II or III, TheGamer Part II or IV), and gameplay.tips says the number cannot be read once the manacles are gone. Read it now.

  6. The story chain: help Murray, repair the laundry machine with the screws (broken on Hard), deal with the cauldron, use the spyglass in the crow's nest, and sit through the vote. Flambé wants a Scorched Alaska. Ask Putra for a promotion request. Visit LeChuck's cabin twice to be given the First Swab's Report.

  7. Line up the messes for Neat Freak. You need 8 different messes, all on LeShip:

    • the ghost rat outside LeChuck's cabin
    • anything in the galley (it all counts as one)
    • the greasy porthole in the hold
    • the grease spot you spread in step 2
    • the chicken splat: feed the ghost chicken on the right of the hold (Molly), leave and come back
    • the spilled potion by the cauldron on the top deck
    • the empty crates on the top deck
    • Gullet, stuck on the rudder underwater
  8. The report only has room for 5 entries.

Warning. Handing the report to Iron Rose closes Neat Freak. SAVE before you file anything.

File 5 of the messes, then reload the save and file the other 3.

Achievement - Neat Freak. Unlocks once all 8 messes have been reported across the two passes.

  9. Take the knife from Gullet at the rudder.

  10. Hand the report to Iron Rose. Take the papers and the request to LeChuck, give the knife to Flair, and take the signed promotion to Putra, who makes the Scorched Alaska.
  11. On Hard the Alaska comes out mild. Use your knife on the glowing flare by the cannon and light the Alaska with it.

Warning. Giving the Scorched Alaska to Flambé closes Hot Headed. Do not hand it over until the achievement has unlocked.

Try to eat the Alaska yourself, and keep trying: Guybrush manages on the 4th attempt.

Achievement - Hot Headed. Unlocks on the fourth try.

  12. Give Flambé the Scorched Alaska. Take Flambé's joke book to Apple Bob and the pamphlet to Iron Rose. Ring the bell once for the vote, then twice to get LeChuck out of the way. Swap the maps in his cabin, load Murray into the cannon and fire.

Achievement - Part Three. Unlocks as Part III begins.

10. Part III - Return to Monkey Island

Achievements: 3 (2 missable) · Part III · Monkey Island

Guybrush lands on Monkey Island and works his way toward the Giant Monkey Head. Six skulls turn up along the way, and they matter twice.

  1. Arrival beach: examine the "L + E" heart tree three times, then kick it five times. Take skull 1 from the left side of the beach.

Achievement - Not Bitter. Unlocks on the fifth kick. It is lost when Part III ends.

  2. Follow the secret map to the shovel: red berry bush, stone monkey hand, wooden chicken, bees. Pick up skull 2 on top of the brown mountain, skull 3 on the shipwreck beach and skull 4 on the Monkey Head path. Take the arm bone near Murray. Skull 5 is on the volcano beach, and skull 6 is underwater, to the left past the anchor.

  3. Gullet at the rudder: talk about Germs, Roses and Snack, then show him the business card (on Hard he wants proof you can publish his poems). He gives you his poetry book.

Warning. Keep Gullet's poetry book. It goes to the museum in Part IV for Promise Keeper, which exists only on Hard.

  4. Get the disguise book and recite on the hull. Collect Apple Bob's clues. Read LeChuck's journal: his catchphrase is on the 17 February page, and it is randomised, so note yours. Call Putra "chef". Ring the bell once (on Hard you have to distract a crewmate), then take the sheet music. Give Putra the squid tentacle for her favourite dish (Hard; Casual uses daisies near the Monkey Head instead).

  5. Giant Monkey Head: put the 6 skulls on the poles and play the notes on the conk. Walkthrough King's notes were "Do Do Mi Sol Fa Fa Re", but they are randomised, so use the ones your game gives you. Finish LeChuck's catchphrase.
  6. After the cut-scene, pick up the repair manual and Murray.

Warning. Using the repair manual on the shipwreck ends Part III and closes Tight Ship and Not Bitter. Before you use it, go back to the Giant Monkey Head and take all six skulls.

  7. Go back to the Giant Monkey Head and take all 6 skulls off the poles.

  8. Use the repair manual on the shipwreck.

Achievement - Tight Ship / Part Four. Both unlock together as Part IV begins. Tight Ship needs all 6 skulls to have been taken back in step 7.

11. Part IV - Things Get Complicated

Achievements: 11 (10 missable) · Part IV · Mêlée, Scurvy Island, Brrr Muda, Barebones Island, Terror Island, the Adrift Ship, the open sea

The open-sea Part: five golden keys to find across several islands, and more than a quarter of the achievement list on the way. The order below is Walkthrough King's.

Warning. Part IV has several points of no return, each with its own Warning below. Inside the Part: cutting the Mansion queue closes Patient Citizen (step 4); becoming queen of Brrr Muda closes the ice castle copy for Bookworm (step 10), and taking Herman's key closes the cave copy (step 13); freeing Stan closes Dental Samaritan (step 17); asking to board the Adrift Ship closes Ahoy There (step 18); stealing the museum's real flag closes Flag Facsimile (step 20). Then the five golden keys in the Voodoo Lady's safe end the Part (step 25), closing everything still open: On The Lam, Relief Pitcher, Promise Keeper, Trophy Fisher and Deep Sea Diver, plus Bragging and Dead Dead Dead if they are still missing. Have Locke Smith make the Free Wally key before then.

  1. Mêlée: take the exotic drink from the docks (it is for the burping contest in step 21). Visit the Voodoo Lady, then Widey Bones about the five keys, and get Wally's sea map.
  2. Fish shop (High Street): buy lumpsuckers, ask about Bella Fisher, and read the copy of "At The End Of The Plank" (Bookworm 3/5). Still missing Bragging? Tell the pirates here about the Secret. Then leave and re-enter the shop again and again: the lumpsucker on the floor moves closer to the door each time until it escapes.

Achievement - On The Lam. Unlocks when the lumpsucker gets away. TrueSteamAchievements flags it as buggy.

  3. Locke Smith: get the probate order. Then give him the serial you read off LeShip's manacles in Part II, and he makes the shackle key. Otis tells you Stan is on Brrr Muda.

Tip. The shackle key is Free Wally. It has to be made before Part V, and doing it now means you cannot forget. While you are in Locke's shop, read his copy of "At The End Of The Plank" again: Walkthrough King's Bookworm count appears to have carried over from Part I, but TrueSteamAchievements says all five can be done in Part IV, and re-reading covers you either way. Do the same with the Mansion bookcase copy in step 4.

  4. Governor's Mansion: there is a queue outside.

Warning. Patient Citizen only works before you cut the line. Wait it out first.

Choose "Wait in line" and then do nothing: no clicks, no menus, for at least 3 minutes.

Achievement - Patient Citizen. Unlocks after about 3 minutes of waiting (one TrueSteamAchievements guide says about 2). Give it a full 3 or more.

    Then cut the line.

  5. Carla: talk to her about the earthquake relief and the IOU, then use your coin purse on her.

Achievement - Relief Pitcher. Unlocks when you offer the purse.

  6. Museum of Pirate Lore: give Gullet's poetry book to Conrad Lee, the curator. To be safe, do it before you steal anything from the museum this Part.

Achievement - Promise Keeper. Hard only: on Casual the museum closes after the first theft and the favour can never be done.

  7. Shipyard: take the picture and the toothbrush from Stan's collapsed shack. Give the IOU to the cook, put the cookbook back on its shelf and borrow "The Endless Tale...".

  8. Scurvy Island: pick up the camp frame, the note and the firewood. Find Elaine (which grove she is in is random) and get the flyer and the limes.
  9. LeShip: give Apple Bob the book in exchange for the joke book. In the galley, combine demon pepper and lumpsuckers into peppered fish. Back on Scurvy Island, use the peppered fish at the seagull nest and take the torn picture.
  10. Brrr Muda: fill in the customs form (number 5, limes, plus the oath). At the courthouse, see Cobb and present the probate order for golden key 1. In the ice castle, take the matches and read the copy of "At The End Of The Plank" (Bookworm 4/5).

Warning. The ice castle copy has to be read before you become queen of Brrr Muda. Read it now, before you go any further with Odina or the trials.

Talk to Odina, start the Heartiness trial and note the fish of the day (it is random).

  11. Mêlée fish shop: trade for the fish of the day. Back on Brrr Muda, pass the three trials: Heartiness (pepper in the bucket, sneak in a normal fish), Intelligence (fire, swap the papers) and Seriousness (the joke book). That is golden key 2.

  12. Terror Island: take the silver key from the unlucky place and the oil lamp from the clearing, pry the sign off the gate, and read the season notes for the cave (their directions are random). On LeShip, go up to the crow's nest and use the lamp on Flambé's head for demon fire (Hard needs demon fire in the cave; any fire works on Casual).
  13. Herman Toothrot's cave: take Herman's book.

Warning. Read the book copy here before taking Herman's key.

Read the copy of "At The End Of The Plank" next to his bed.

Achievement - Bookworm. Unlocks on the fifth copy. If it does not, you have missed one of the earlier four: re-read Locke's, the Mansion's and the fish shop's. The ice castle copy cannot be read once you are queen.

Then take the key: golden key 3.

  14. Brrr Muda, Ice Quarry: frame the portraits for the guard and get Stan's judge's order.

Warning. The toothbrush has to reach Stan before you free him (step 17).

    Give Stan the toothbrush.

Achievement - Dental Samaritan. Unlocks as Stan takes the toothbrush.

  15. Barebones Island: take Ned's satchel. At the courthouse, use Ned's licence on the frame and get the extended sentence. Back on Barebones, take Ned's photo. Give Stan the extended sentence, and use the double monocle on Stan's shackles for their serial.

  16. Mêlée: Locke Smith makes the key for Stan's shackles. At the museum, give crackers to the parrots and steal the replica flag.

Warning. Leave the museum's real flag where it is for now. TrueSteamAchievements says the Flag Facsimile swap has to happen before the real flag is stolen (step 20).

  17. Brrr Muda: free Stan, and take the new pamphlet.

  18. The Adrift Ship: sail out to it and talk to the quarantined pirates.

Warning. Asking to board ends the "Ahoy!" exchange. Count to 21 or more first.

Choose "Ahoy!" over and over, at least 21 times, before you ask to board.

Achievement - Ahoy There. Unlocks once you pass twenty. Walkthrough King stopped at 20 and gameplay.tips says 21; the description says "More Than Twenty", so 21 is the safe number.

  19. Use the pamphlet, board, and take the first of the three flags. Then use the replica flag on the quarantined pirates' flag.

Achievement - Flag Facsimile. Hard only. TrueSteamAchievements says to do the swap before you steal the real flag from the museum storeroom, which is why the replica comes first in this route.

  20. Museum: steal the real flag from the storeroom (flag 2 of 3).

  21. Fish shop: ask about the flag twice to be given a fishing lure. Show the lure to the five chums:

    • Locke Smith
    • the pirate at the docks, outside the Scumm Bar
    • Apple Bob on LeShip
    • Elaine in the Scurvy Island lime grove
    • the Ice Quarry guard on Brrr Muda

Go back to the fish shop and tell the longest, most descriptive story the options allow. Walkthrough King's winning picks: the blockade was "thick and deadly as the crab bisque...", a "chum-chomping line-breaker" whale swallowed you, it was "like walking on soft cheese... pea soup", you made "fishing line with my own hair", and you used an "umbrella jighead... reeled it in from the inside".

Achievement - Trophy Fisher. Unlocks when you become a Prize Chum.

Flag 3 of 3: Voidberry says that on Hard, Bella Fisher's spot needs the fish shop's flag as well as the museum's and the Adrift Ship's. That becoming a Prize Chum is the route to the fish-shop flag is inferred: no source says so outright. Then drink the exotic drink and win the blowfish in the burping contest.

  22. The open sea: sail anywhere, drop anchor, inflate the blowfish and climb down. Do it again at a different spot, and again, until you have seen every kind of seabed. Then combine the three flags (Adrift Ship, museum, fish shop) and dive at the Bella Fisher spot for golden key 4.

Achievement - Deep Sea Diver. Unlocks once you have seen every seabed variant. Sources disagree on how many there are. Walkthrough King counts 5 variants plus the Bella Fisher site, and the PS5 progress counter reads 0/6, so 6 is the best-supported number. TheGamer says 7, and an unconfirmed TrueAchievements excerpt says 7-8. Do not stop counting at 6: keep anchoring at new spots, Bella Fisher dive or not, until it unlocks. The sea stays open until the safe.

  23. LeShip hold: feed the key chicken, leave and come back for golden key 5.

  24. Before the safe, set up Cogg Island.

Warning. SAVE in a new slot and keep it. This Part IV save, with the blowfish and the sea map, is what you load after the credits for Cogg Island (§14). If the Cogg Island trivia card has turned up in your book, leave it unanswered. Answering it in this run removes it.

  25. Run the checklist one last time: the ten achievements above, Bragging, Dead Dead Dead, and the Free Wally key in your inventory.

Warning. Putting the five golden keys in the Voodoo Lady's safe ends Part IV. Nothing above can be done after it.

Put the keys in the safe.

Achievement - Part Five. Unlocks as Part V begins.

12. Part V - Beneath the Monkey Head

Achievements: 2 (2 missable) · Part V · Monkey Island caverns

The last Part, underground in the caverns. Free Wally needs the key you prepared in Parts II and IV, and I Don’t Believe is a save-and-reload achievement near the very end.

  1. At the start of the caverns, use the LeShip shackle key from Part IV on Wally's manacles.

Achievement - Free Wally. Unlocks as the manacles open.

  2. The Organized door: put the crackers, the knife, the double monocle and the empty mug on the statues.

  3. The Observant door: the 5 stone coins and the real piece of eight.
  4. The Bloodthirsty door: stab the statues and catch the blue blood in the mug.
  5. Note the face and date symbols over the three doors; they are randomised. Set the stone wheel to them. Walkthrough King's sequence from there was: change the date 4 times, outer wheel right 3, inner wheel left 2. Check it against your own symbols.
  6. Near the very end you are given Stan's key ring.

Warning. I Don’t Believe needs a save and reload. SAVE before you use the key ring, and keep that save until the achievement has unlocked. Step 7 gives the trigger; the spoiler table at the end of §6 also describes the normal finish, so you know what not to do first.

  7. Use the key ring on the locked door in the alley (gameplay.tips calls it the church alley door), go through and climb back up.

Achievement - I Don’t Believe. Unlocks as you climb back up.

  8. Reload the save and finish the game the normal way. The credits put a completed game on your profile, which is what Cogg Island needs.

13. Trivia Cards - The 100-Answer Grind

Achievements: 6 · Parts I-IV · progress shared across every save and new game

Six achievements ride on trivia cards: Card Collector (more than 20 cards picked up) and five tiers of correct answers, ending at Trivia Overlord for 100. None of them has a fixed location to tick off, so this section explains the system rather than listing cards.

Achievement - Card Collector / Trivia Go Getter / Trivia Master / Trivia Grand Master / Trivia Lord / Trivia Overlord. Card Collector needs 21 cards (Walkthrough King: "Collect 21"), and they do not have to be answered. The other five unlock at 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 correct answers.

How cards work

How many you need

Warning. The 170-card figure rests on weak sourcing. It comes from a Switch update log that has no patch notes for that update, and from LegendofMI's answer list, which runs to 17 pages. IsThereAnyDeal shows Steam's public build last updated on 6 February 2023, which fits, but Steam's own news feed has no announcement for it. Either way, the target is 100 correct answers, so you are safe whichever total your game has. One inference from the numbers: with 170 cards, the Cogg Island card is not needed for Trivia Overlord.

Keeping cards coming

Mêlée Island spawn spots (Part I)

KosGames is the only source with spawn spots, and only for Mêlée in Part I. These are places a card can appear, not a list of cards. No source gives spots or per-Part counts for Parts II to IV.

14. Post-Game - Cogg Island

Achievements: 1 (1 missable) · Post-game · the kept Part IV save

Cogg Island needs a finished game on the profile. In your first run its trivia card (page 9, card 2, per gameplay.tips) has no correct answer; once the credits have rolled, the same card shows a real coordinate.

  1. Finish the game once (§12).
  2. Load the Part IV save you kept at §11, step 24. It needs the blowfish, because on Hard you cannot dive without it, and the sea map. Look for the red skull icon to be sure it is the Hard save.
  3. Open the Cogg Island card if you left it unanswered, or find it if you have not picked it up yet. It now shows a grid coordinate, given in forms such as K.3, D.14 or J11. Answer it.

Tip. Use the coordinate your card shows, never one from a guide or a forum. Sources disagree on whether it differs per player or per game, and either way someone else's will not match. Answering the Cogg card wrongly in your first run removes it.

  4. Sail to that exact square on the sea map.

Warning. SAVE before you arrive. One source (gameplay.tips) says you cannot leave Cogg Island once you are there. It is unconfirmed, but a save costs nothing.

  5. Drop anchor and dive.

Achievement - Cogg Island. Unlocks when you find it.

Then keep collecting trivia on this or any Part I-IV save until Trivia Overlord unlocks (§13).

15. Playthrough 2 - Speed Runner

Achievements: 1 · Casual · Writer's Cut off · under 2 hours

Reach the end of the game in 2 hours or less. Difficulty does not matter for the achievement, so take the shortest version of every puzzle.

  1. New Game on Casual. Before you start, turn Writer's Cut off in the settings.
  2. Move fast: double-click to run, . to skip each line of dialogue, Esc to skip cut-scenes, i for the inventory and M for the sea map.
  3. Follow a Casual step list. KosGames publishes a Speed Runner walkthrough for Casual, and the solutions in §7-§12 still apply, minus the Hard-only steps listed below. Ignore every side goal and every trivia card.
  4. Finish with the normal ending.

Achievement - Speed Runner. Unlocks at the end if the clock reads 2 hours or less. Voidberry reports getting it despite a couple of mistakes, and a Steam forum player reports a run of about 1.5 hours.

Warning. Two things are unconfirmed, so play it safe. The finish: Voidberry got the achievement by finishing the game normally, and no source says whether the I Don’t Believe route also counts. Do not take it on this run. Reloading: the in-game timer pauses while the game is paused, but nobody has confirmed what loading a save does to it. Pause rather than quit when you need a break, and play straight through rather than reloading.

What Casual skips (from Voidberry's comparison and other guides):

17. Accuracy & Sources

This walkthrough was written fresh for this site in October 2026 from a fact sheet researched the same month. The sources were Steam's global achievement page and store page for AppID 2060130, Steam's news feed (patch notes 1.2 to 1.5), Exophase, TrueSteamAchievements (list, flags, time estimate and per-achievement solutions), the Monkey Island Fandom wiki, Walkthrough King's Hard + Writer's Cut walkthrough (39 of 39), KosGames' achievement guide and Speed Runner walkthrough, GamePretty's 100% guide and Voidberry's speedrun guide with its Casual-versus-Hard comparison, gameplay.tips' guide and its comments, TheGamer's achievement and trivia guides, Sirus Gaming's PS5 trophy guide, Sportskeeda's achievement and difficulty articles, PCGamesN's forest-map and trivia guides, LegendofMI, Perfectly Nintendo, IsThereAnyDeal, Wikipedia, Into Indie Games, GamePressure, and three Steam discussion threads (trivia spawning, Hard and Casual save icons, Cogg Island). PowerPyx has no guide for this game. TrueAchievements, SteamHunters, Completionist.me, GameStar, GameFAQs and ProGameGuides could not be reached.

What is solid. The 39 names and descriptions come from Steam's own page; the hidden descriptions come from Exophase and TrueSteamAchievements, which match word for word, and all three agree on which 10 are hidden. The unlock rates quoted (Speed Runner 1.5%, Trivia Overlord 1.7%) are Steam's global figures in October 2026. The Hard-only status of Promise Keeper and Flag Facsimile is stated by Voidberry, a gameplay.tips commenter and a TrueSteamAchievements guide, and TrueSteamAchievements flags exactly those two as difficulty-specific. The PS5 progress counters (Cartography Nerd 0/18, Bragging 0/15, Mop Top 0/4, Super Swabbie 0/20, Neat Freak 0/8, Deep Sea Diver 0/6, Bookworm 0/5, Card Collector 0/20) were used to check the targets.
