Monkey Island · Volume 3 of 4The Curse of Monkey Island - The Complete 100% Walkthrough
The full Mega-Monkey route through all six parts with its 22 extra puzzle steps marked, all 28 optional extras, all 16 pirate insults and comebacks, all 16 of Captain Rottingham's insults, the light-panel sequence and the banjo duel. Written for the Steam release (AppID 730820, out 22 March 2018), which runs the 1997 game in a preconfigured ScummVM on Windows and macOS. The Steam release has no achievements, so this guide defines 100% as finishing the game in Mega-Monkey mode with every optional extra done.
1. What "100%" Means in The Curse of Monkey Island
The Curse of Monkey Island (LucasArts, 1997, directed by Larry Ahern and Jonathan Ackley) was LucasArts' twelfth and last SCUMM game. Guybrush proposes to Elaine with a diamond ring from a sunken treasure hold, the ring is cursed, and she turns to gold. Putting it right means an uncursed ring from Blood Island, and getting there means a crew, a map and a ship.
The Steam release has no achievements. The store page and the store's own data list none, Steam's global stats page for the game says no stats are available, and TrueSteamAchievements files it as a title with no achievements. There is nothing for Steam to count, so this guide sets the bar itself:
- Mega-Monkey, start to finish. The game offers two modes when you start: regular and Mega-Monkey. Mega-Monkey is the full puzzle set: 22 extra or harder steps across Parts 2, 4, 5 and 6. Every one is marked in the route.
- 28 optional extras, tracked in §6:
- Settings and modes (3): Mega-Monkey itself, full-control sea battles and the options-screen "3D acceleration" gag.
- Conversations (5): Wally and Murray in Part 1, the barbershop quartet in Part 2, every verse of the pirate song in Part 3, Lemonhead's "Pair of dimes?" in Part 4 and LeChuck's cable-car talk in Part 5.
- Insult swordfighting (1): every insult and comeback learnt and every ship tier beaten before you face Rottingham.
- Gags, easter eggs and hidden scenes (19): from a town that is closed for business to The Dig's spider and the post-credits segment.
- The insult reference: all 32 pairs (16 pirate insults with their comebacks, 16 Rottingham insults with the right answer) are in §9.
- Not part of it: cheats. The Appendix lists the known ones so you can avoid them.
Warning. Eight extras close for good at a fixed point: the mode choice itself, Wally and Murray's dialogue, Puerto Pollo's "closed for business" gag, the walk-the-plank gag, the quicksand plaque, the pirate song, the full insult set and LeChuck's cable-car talk. Two more are best done before Part 2 ends. Each one has a Warning in the route before its point of no return. Make a manual save before every one of them.
Spoiler policy
Each part gets one line of setup, not a retelling, and the ending is not described. The route itself has to name the puzzles, items and characters you meet, so read only the part you are playing. LeChuck's cable-car backstory is flagged as something to hear, not summarised.
2. How to Use This Guide
Parts. The game is a prologue cutscene and six parts, each with a title card. Guides word some of the titles slightly differently; this guide uses the most common form.
Every part below has:
- A count strip: optional extras, Mega-Monkey extra steps and location.
- A line of setup.
- A numbered solution, split into areas. Numbering restarts at 1 in each area.
- Markers in the steps. Mega-Monkey: opens a step or sentence that only happens in that mode. (Regular: ...) says what regular mode does instead, so the route still reads if you are on the easier mode. Extra: points to a row in §6.
- A Warning before every point of no return for a missable extra.
The §6 tables are the checklist. Tick a row's box as you go; progress is saved in your browser, per guide.
Tip. Order within a part is flexible. The walkthroughs this guide was checked against sequence Parts 2 and 4 differently and all of them finish the game. The order here keeps every missable extra ahead of its deadline.

One Mega-Monkey playthrough. Each part's missable extras sit ahead of the step that closes them.
Why this order?
- Mega-Monkey first. The mode is chosen at the start, and no source confirms you can switch mid-game. A regular-mode run means starting again.
- Talk before you act. The missable extras are mostly conversations and gags. Part 1's dialogue ends when the cannon fires, the pirate song plays once, and LeChuck's talk ends the moment you leave it.
- Every insult before Rottingham. He only insults and you only answer, so you need comebacks, not insults. Rematching ordinary pirates is how you learn them, and Part 3 ends with his duel.
- Counters while you pass. Part 4 has three repetition gags (the Grog poster's 5 changes, 25 tries at the sea water, 35 trips in and out of Stan's crypt). Do them while the route has you in each spot rather than walking back.
Warning. The mode is chosen at the new-game prompt, before Part 1 starts. Pick Mega-Monkey.
4. Mechanics Worth Knowing Before You Start
- Two modes. Regular and Mega-Monkey, chosen when you start a new game. The store blurb calls Mega-Monkey the one "with more puzzley goodness". Steam players report regular mode cuts a lot of the game; that is opinion, but the full puzzle set is only in Mega-Monkey.
- Sea battles have their own setting. Early in Part 3, Haggis asks what kind of captain you are: full control or crew help. Talk to him again to switch at any time. Tom Hayes says the only difference is that on the tougher setting enemy ships take more than one cannonball.
- Combine in the inventory. Many solutions are two items joined in the inventory: the gaff, the pea shooter, the floating balloon, the sticky plug, the compass, the fake pie, the fuse.
- The parrot icon covers mouth actions: blowing the balloon along, biting a cork out, blowing out a flame.
- Insult swordfighting is Part 3's main event. The rules are in §9.
- Saves. The Steam build keeps its saves in
{game}\ScummVM\monkey3\monkey3.s*and its settings in{game}\ScummVM\monkey3\monkey3.ini. Steam Cloud is on (976.56 KiB). Save before each Warning in the route. - ScummVM. Steam and GOG both ship the game preconfigured in ScummVM and DRM-free. Steam has Windows and macOS builds, no Linux, and English, French, Italian, German and Spanish with full audio and subtitles.
- How long. HowLongToBeat (as shown on GOG's store page) gives 7.5 hours for the main story and 10 hours for completionists. The store copy's "30-plus hours" is marketing.
5. The Master Checklist
Extras by part. The Mega-Monkey column counts the additions §13 lists for each part.
| # | Part | Location | Optional extras | Mega-Monkey extra steps | Running total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Before you start | New-game prompt, Options | 2 | 0 | 2 |

| Total | 28 | 22 | 28 |
6. The Optional Extras - All 28
None of these is tracked by Steam. Rows marked Missable close at the point named; the rest can be done any time in their part. Several come from a single source and are flagged as such.
Before you start (2)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Mega-Monkey mode | The new-game prompt | Choose Mega-Monkey, not regular. Missable: the choice is made at the start, and no source confirms it can be changed later. |
| The "3D acceleration" gag | Options screen | ScummBar lists a fake "3D acceleration" option as a gag. Open the options and try it. Available any time. |
Part 1 (1)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Wally and Murray, every line | Gun room (Wally), out of the gun-room window (Murray) | Exhaust Wally, saving "You're a failure as a pirate" for last. Talk Murray through and use the gaff or the skeleton arm on him. Best Murray path: "Lose Something?", "doorstop", "BOB", "candle", any scream, "eyeballs", "wear", "bald". Missable: Wally and Murray are gone once the cannon fires. |
Part 2 (10)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Puerto Pollo, closed for business | Puerto Pollo, at the start of Part 2 | Walk round the town before you talk to the Voodoo Lady. Missable: talking to her closes it. |
| The "secret button" | The bridge near the opening beach | Try the secret button on the bridge. Single source, unconfirmed. |
| Gum for Murray | The swamp | Give Murray some gum while you still have it. Save first: the sources don't say whether he keeps it, and Blondebeard needs your gum later. |
| Donkey-head mask, ordering speaker, insulting Rottingham | Plunder Island; Rottingham is in the barber's chair until the lice trick | Cindy Wells lists all three as Part 2 gags without exact spots. Insult Rottingham before you use the lice on Haggis's comb. Do them all before Part 2 ends. |
| The barbershop quartet | The barber shop | Ask each of the three barbers about joining your crew and listen to their other songs. Tom Hayes notes the crew leave Guybrush at the start of Part 4, so do it in Part 2. |
| The diorama's mysterious door | The field of honour | Use the mysterious door on the field-of-honour diorama several times, before you shoot the banjo. Save first. |
| A gun in the banjo duel | The field of honour | Pick up a gun during the duel to see what happens. One walkthrough notes it costs a restart, so save first. |
| The quicksand plaque | The quicksand pit, and Danjer Cove where you come out | Read the plaque for the "pappapisshu!" line. Missable: treat escaping the quicksand as the deadline, and check Danjer Cove too, where one walkthrough places it. |
| Domingo's "happy new year" | Brimstone Beach, Palido Domingo | Talk to Palido while your PC's date is in January. Single source (ScummBar). |
| Walk the plank | Danjer Cove, the Sea Cucumber | Row out and climb aboard without cutting the plank: you walk the plank instead. Then do it properly. Missable: cutting the plank closes it. |
Part 3 (3)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Every pirate-song verse | Your ship, the start of Part 3 | Keep picking lines and take the orange line only in the fifth verse, when you are ready to end it. Missable: the song plays once. |
| Full-control sea battles | Talk to Haggis | Pick full control when he asks what kind of captain you are. Switchable any time by talking to him again. |
| All 16 insults, all 16 comebacks, every ship tier | The open sea | Rematch ships until you know every insult and comeback (§9) and have beaten a ship from each of the six tiers. Missable: Part 3 ends with Rottingham's duel. |
Part 4 (10)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| The Grog poster | Hotel Goodsoup bar | Leave the bar again and again: the Grog poster changes 5 times. |
| "Pair of dimes?" | The village, Lemonhead | Hover over the dialogue options repeatedly while talking to Lemonhead until "Pair of dimes?" appears. |
| Domingo's crispy flesh | The village, Lemonhead | Offer Lemonhead the skin map, which ScummBar calls "Domingo's crispy flesh". |
| Sea water, 25 tries | Where you fill the measuring cup with sea water | Try to pick up the sea water 25 times and Guybrush walks into the ocean. |
| The Dig spider | Stan's crypt, the cemetery | Enter and leave Stan's crypt 35 times. ScummBar lists it; no second source. |
| The crack in the Goodsoup crypt | The Goodsoup crypt | Look through the crack: the view is an old LucasArts game screen. It is also a route step. |
| The crypt kiss | A crypt in Part 4 | ScummBar lists a crypt kiss after which a statue's face changes. Single source, no exact spot. |
| Wait outside the crypt | Outside the crypt | Stand and wait outside the crypt for a cutscene. |
| Falling from LaFoot's winch | Skull Island, the winch | Let LaFoot drop you and do not open the umbrella: you climb back up and get more dialogue. Then do it properly. |
| King Andre's toys | Skull Island, the cave | Check King Andre's toys, a LeChuck toy among them, before the card game. Single source. |
Part 5 (1)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| LeChuck's cable-car talk | The cable car, the start of Part 5 | Exhaust every line before you end the conversation; it fills in series backstory. Missable: ending the talk moves the story on. |
Part 6 (1)
| Extra | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| The post-credits segment | After the final scene | Sit through the credits. |
7. Part 1 - The Demise of the Zombie Pirate LeChuck
Optional extras: 1 · Mega-Monkey extra steps: 0 · Gun room and treasure hold
Guybrush starts in a ship's gun room with a cannon, a small pirate called Wally, and four skeleton boats outside. This part plays the same in both modes.
- In the gun room, take the ramrod from the wall.
- Talk to Wally until his dialogue runs dry. He gives you pirate literature. Keep "You're a failure as a pirate" for last: it ends the conversation. Wally cries and drops his plastic hook; take it.
- Use the cannon and sink all four skeleton boats. For the two near boats, line the cannon up, lower it fully, then raise it 1 notch. For the two far boats, raise it 7 notches instead.
-
Look out of the window (the red arrow). In the inventory, combine the hook and the ramrod into a gaff. Use the gaff on the debris to fish out the skeleton arm and a cutlass. Extra: talk Murray through (best path in §6) and use the gaff or the arm on him.
Warning. The next step fires the cannon, and after that Wally and Murray are gone. Finish Wally's and Murray's dialogue and the gaff or arm gag on Murray first.
-
Go back inside, cut the cannon's restraint rope with the cutlass and use the cannon. The recoil sinks the ship.
- In the upside-down treasure hold, take the bag of wooden nickels by the portrait, then the diamond ring under it. Use the ring on the porthole. Cutscene: you propose, and Elaine turns to gold.
8. Part 2 - The Curse Gets Worse
Optional extras: 10 · Mega-Monkey extra steps: 10 · Plunder Island
Plunder Island, with Elaine turned to gold: the Voodoo Lady sets the goal of a crew, a map and a ship. The areas below can be taken in other orders.
Beach and swamp
-
Take the glowing ember (an ember on a stick) from the beach. Extra: try the "secret button" on the bridge.
Warning. Before you talk to the Voodoo Lady in step 3, walk round Puerto Pollo: the "closed for business" gag only exists until that conversation.
-
Go to the swamp and talk to Murray. Inside the Voodoo Lady's wrecked ship, take the voodoo pin from the paper doll. Mega-Monkey: take the paste (the glue pot) too. Use the nickels on the gumball machine for gum (steak flavour). Extra: give Murray some gum. Save first: the sources don't say whether he keeps it, and Blondebeard needs your gum later.
- Pull the alligator tongue and talk to the Voodoo Lady until she runs out. After the cutscene you know the plan: an uncursed ring from Blood Island, which needs a crew, a map and a ship.
Theatre dressing room
The side door to the left of the clock tower in Puerto Pollo.
- Mega-Monkey: look at the pirate coat first. Then take the dandruff from the coat: it is lice. Then, Mega-Monkey: open the coat pocket and take the white glove. (Regular: the glove hangs from the sleeve.)
- Use the magic wand on the magic hat to get the ventriloquism book. None of the sources says where you pick up the wand. Look at the Blood Island sticker on the trunk. On stage, talk to Slappy Cromwell: his agent, Palido Domingo, is at the Brimstone Beach Club.
Barbery Coast
The barber shop at the docks. The barbers are Haggis McMutton, Edward Van Helgen and Cutthroat Bill; the customer in the chair is Rene Rottingham.
Warning. The lice trick in step 1 gets Rottingham shaved and thrown out of the shop. Insulting him there is one of Cindy Wells' Part 2 gags, so do it before step 1.
- When Haggis puts down his comb, use the lice on it. Rottingham is shaved and thrown out.
- Sit in the chair and ask for a haircut. Use the chair handle once. Mega-Monkey: pick up the paperweight. (Regular: Guybrush kicks it off.) Haggis leaves. Use the handle 3 more times and take the scissors from the ceiling.
- Mega-Monkey: push or pat Cutthroat Bill twice and take the jawbreaker he spits out. (Regular: it is on the floor.) Talk to Bill (he wants gold) and to Haggis (he wants a caber toss). Extra: ask all three barbers about joining and hear their other songs, the barbershop quartet.
- The banjo duel. Use the glove on Edward Van Helgen to go to the field of honour. Close the lid of the middle pistol box, then open the banjo case behind him, and play (rules below). Extra: save first, then use the diorama's mysterious door several times and pick up a gun during the duel (one walkthrough says the gun costs a restart). When he starts riffing on his own, take a pistol from the gun pile and shoot his banjo. Van Helgen joins your crew.
The banjo duel:
- Weapon. Closing the middle pistol box and opening the banjo case picks the game's "unusual" weapon.
- The game. Van Helgen plays phrases that each end on a single plucked string. On your turn, pluck the same strings in the same order, like Simon.
- Rounds. 4 strings, then 5. Mega-Monkey: a third round of 6. Cindy Wells numbers the strings 1 (top) to 5 (bottom). One wrong pluck restarts that round.
- No fixed sequence. No source gives a note order that always works. Watch and repeat.
- The finish. When he riffs solo, shoot the banjo with a pistol from the pile.
Snake Crossing and the quicksand
The passage between the lemonade stand and Blondebeard's.
- Use the scissors on the mysterious flowers to get an ipecac flower, then on the undergrowth. Read the sign, and the snake swallows you.
-
Inside the snake, take everything: the reservation slip, the encyclopedia, the Faberge egg, the pancake syrup, the helium balloons and the vacuum attachments. Combine the flower and the syrup into syrup of ipecac and use it on the snake's head.
Warning. The next step gets you out of the quicksand. Read the plaque for the "pappapisshu!" line before you leave, and check again at Danjer Cove, where one walkthrough places it.
-
In the quicksand, take a thorn and a hollow reed and combine them into a pea shooter. Combine a balloon and the paperweight into a floating balloon. Blow on it (the parrot icon) until it is over the branch, then shoot it. You escape to Danjer Cove.
Blondebeard's Chicken n' Things
- Show the reservation slip. Talk to Blondebeard about his gold tooth, his lost club card and El Pollo Diablo.
- Push the quiet patron, a skeleton, and take the serrated bread knife from his back.
- Mega-Monkey: take a biscuit and eat it to find maggots. Use the maggots on the gross chicken, then take the Brimstone Beach Club card. (Regular: just take the card.) Keep the half-eaten maggoty biscuit: the cemetery dog in Part 4 wants it. Mega-Monkey: take the pie pan and the biscuit cutter as well.
- Give Blondebeard the jawbreaker, then the gum. Pop his bubble with the pin and take the gold tooth.
- Mega-Monkey: Blondebeard frisks you, so the tooth has to leave another way. Chew the gum, put the tooth in the chewed gum, inhale helium from a balloon, then chew the gum with the tooth: it floats out of the window. Outside, use the pie pan on the mud puddle under the drainpipe to get the tooth back.
Caber toss and the crew
- Go through the archway to the right of the clock tower to the grassy knoll. Use the serrated knife on the sawhorse to spill a rum trail and light it with the ember. A rubber tree lands on the log pile.
- Mega-Monkey: use the biscuit cutter on the remaining rubber tree to get a rubber plug.
- In the barber shop, show Bill the gold tooth (show, not give). He joins, and you keep the tooth: Part 4 needs it. Ask Haggis to join and accept the caber toss. The rubber log wins it. Your crew is complete.
The map: Brimstone Beach
- Show the club card to the cabana boy. Take towels and wet them in the ice bucket: you need three wet towels for the sand. Whip the cabana boy with a wet towel and take the cooking oil (vegetable oil).
- Lay the wet towels across the hot sand. Talk to Palido, who has the map tattooed on his back, and take his mug. Extra: if your PC's date is in January, he has a "happy new year" for you. Leave through the gate.
- At the lemonade stand, Kenny's: buy once to see the trick if you like. Swap your mug for his bottomless one, then buy again. He runs off. Take the pitcher and fill it at the red dye vat.
- Back on the beach, give Palido the bottomless mug and pour the dye into it. He thinks he is burnt and turns over. Use the cooking oil on the tattoo and take the map.
The ship: Danjer Cove
-
Mega-Monkey: combine the paste and the rubber plug into a sticky plug and use it on the hole in the rowboat. (Regular: the boat needs no repair.)
Warning. Before you cut the plank, row out and climb aboard the Sea Cucumber without cutting it: you walk the plank instead, the gag for §6. Then come back and do step 2.
-
Row to the Sea Cucumber and use the serrated knife on the plank. Board: Mr. Fossey has you tarred and feathered.
- Go into Blondebeard's. He takes you for El Pollo Diablo and knocks you out, and you wake in a chicken pot aboard the Sea Cucumber. You get the chicken grease automatically.
- Use the ventriloquism book on Captain LeChimp. Fossey leaves; take the treasure map and leave through the porthole.
Elaine: the theatre
Warning. These are the last steps of Part 2. Before you go on, finish the Part 2 extras that have no other deadline: the barbershop quartet (the crew leave Guybrush when Part 4 starts), the donkey-head mask, the ordering speaker and gum for Murray.
- Go to the stage (Guybrush walks back off), then upstairs to the lighting room. Mega-Monkey: press the panel directions below. (Regular: just pull the handle.)
- Downstairs, use the chicken grease on the cannonballs in the trunk. Slappy's act fails. On stage, take the shovel and dig up Elaine. Part 2 ends.
The light panel, Mega-Monkey only:
- Press SE, NW, W, S, E, NE, NE, E, SW: nine presses.
- If it goes wrong, flip the switch to restart the sequence.
9. Part 3 - Three Sheets to the Wind
Optional extras: 3 · Mega-Monkey extra steps: 0 · The open sea
At sea in your own ship, with your new crew.
-
Cutscene: Rottingham beats you at insult swordfighting and takes the map.
Warning. The pirate song plays once. Hear every verse before you pick the orange line in step 2.
-
The pirate song. Keep choosing lines. In the fifth verse, choose "We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange." to end it: nothing rhymes with orange.
- Haggis asks what kind of captain you are. Extra: choose full control. Talk to him again any time to switch.
- Open the navigation chart and sail into the "?" ships. Sink one in the real-time sea battle (arrow keys or mouse), then board it for insult swordfighting. Winning earns booty.
- Sail back to Puerto Pollo (also given as "Plunder Town Harbor"), where Kenny now sells cannons. Upgrade one level at a time up to the Destructomatic T-47, the best cannon and the one Rottingham has.
-
Work through the ship tiers in order (tier list from Cindy Wells only): orange "Really Not Fearsome Pirates", green "Mildly Fearsome", blue "Semi Fearsome", brown "Pretty Fearsome", white "Fearsome", red "Really Fearsome". After your first sea win against a ship, rematches with it go straight to the swordfight. Extra: rematch until you know every insult and comeback below and have beaten every tier.
Warning. Part 3 ends with Rottingham. Learn all 16 comebacks and beat all six tiers before you attack his ship.
-
Sink Rottingham's ship, then win the duel (rules below). The map comes back to you and Part 3 ends.
The rules
- Ordinary pirates. First to 3 points wins. An unanswered insult scores for the insulter; a correct comeback scores for the defender, who then insults next.
- Learning. You learn an insult when a pirate uses it on you and a comeback when a pirate answers you with it.
- Comebacks rhyme with their insult. That is the test when you are unsure.
- Rottingham. He always insults and you only answer. Kasey Chang says one miss loses and you need three points; Cyberly says three valid comebacks in a row. Kasey Chang alone says Mega-Monkey needs at least four, and that Mega-Monkey pirates know more insults. With all 16 comebacks you can answer every one of his insults, so the exact rule stops mattering.
- Losing to him. Cindy Wells says a loss gives you a surge of new insults. Single source.
The 16 pirate insults and comebacks
The text below follows Tom Hayes, with the full set confirmed by Cindy Wells. Small wording variants exist between sources; check the exact in-game lines as you play. Each line is the insult, then its comeback.
- "Coming face to face with me must leave you petrified!" / "Is that your face? I thought it was your backside."
- "En garde! Touché!" / "Oh, that is so cliché!"
- "Every enemy I've met I've annihilated!" / "With your breath, I'm sure they all suffocated."
- "Heaven preserve me! You look like something that's died!" / "The only way you'll be preserved is in formaldehyde."
- "I can't rest 'til you've been exterminated!" / "Then perhaps you should switch to decaffeinated."
- "I have never seen such clumsy swordplay!" / "You would have, but you were always running away."
- "I'll hound you night and day!" / "Then be a good dog. Sit! Stay!"
- "I'll skewer you like a sow at a buffet!" / "When I'm done with YOU, you'll be a boneless fillet."
- "I'll leave you devastated, mutilated and perforated." / "Your odor alone makes me aggravated, agitated and infuriated."
- "Killing you would be justifiable homicide!" / "Then killing you must be justifiable fungicide."
- "Throughout the Caribbean, my great deeds are celebrated!" / "Too bad they're all fabricated."
- "When your father first saw you, he must have been mortified." / "At least mine can be identified."
- "Would you like to be buried or cremated?" / "With you around, I'd prefer to be fumigated."
- "You can't match my witty repartee!" / "I could, if you would use some breath spray."
- "You're as repulsive as a monkey in a negligee." / "I look THAT much like your fiancée?"
- "You're the ugliest monster ever created!" / "If you don't count all the ones you've dated."
Captain Rottingham's 16 insults
Every one is answered with a pirate comeback from the list above. Each line is Rottingham's insult, then the right answer.
- "My attacks have left entire islands depopulated!" / "With your breath, I'm sure they all suffocated."
- "You have the sex appeal of a Shar-Pei." / "I look THAT much like your fiancée?"
- "When I'm done, your body will be rotted and putrefied!" / "Then killing you must be justifiable fungicide."
- "Your looks would make pigs nauseated." / "If you don't count all the ones you've dated."
- "Your lips look like they belong on the catch of the day!" / "When I'm done with YOU, you'll be a boneless fillet."
- "I give you a choice. You can be gutted, or decapitated!" / "With you around, I'd prefer to be fumigated."
- "You're a disgrace to your species, you're so undignified!" / "At least mine can be identified."
- "I can't tell which of my traits has you the most intimidated." / "Your odor alone makes me aggravated, agitated and infuriated."
- "I have never lost a melee!" / "You would have, but you were always running away."
- "Nothing on this earth can save your sorry hide!" / "The only way you'll be preserved is in formaldehyde."
- "You'll find I'm dogged and relentless to my prey!" / "Then be a good dog. Sit! Stay!"
- "Your stench would make an outhouse cleaner irritated!" / "Then perhaps you should switch to decaffeinated."
- "My skills with a sword are highly venerated." / "Too bad they're all fabricated."
- "Never before have I faced someone so sissified." / "Is that your face? I thought it was your backside."
- "Nothing can stop me from blowing you away!" / "I could, if you would use some breath spray."
- "Your mother wears a toupee!" / "Oh, that is so cliché!"
10. Part 4 - The Bartender, the Thieves, His Aunt, and Her Lover
Optional extras: 10 · Mega-Monkey extra steps: 9 · Blood Island and Skull Island
Blood Island, after the shipwreck. The goal is an uncursed ring: its band is in the Goodsoup family crypt and its diamond is on Skull Island.
Shipwreck beach and Hotel Goodsoup
- On the shipwreck beach, take the bottle of Cap'n Nick's shaving cream and bite it (the parrot icon) to get the cork. Mega-Monkey: the bottle does not open easily; Cindy Wells lists it as a Mega-Monkey difference. Talk to Haggis about his lotion: he will trade it for a tar substitute.
- At Hotel Goodsoup:
- In the back room (the door to the right of the poster), take the refrigerator magnet and look at the file cabinet.
- Visit Madame Xima. Mega-Monkey: keep asking for your fortune until all 5 death tarot cards are on the table. Take the tarot cards.
- In the bar, take the recipe book, the barstool cushion and, if you like, the brochures. Pages 8-9 of the recipe book give Head-B-Clear: an egg, a pepper and the hair of the dog that bit you.
- Extra: leave the bar repeatedly until the Grog poster has changed 5 times.
Cemetery, beach, windmill and village
- In the cemetery (the left screen), take the mallet and the chisel. Mega-Monkey: give the old dog the half-eaten maggoty biscuit from Blondebeard's. (Regular: there are dog treats.) When it bites you, take the dog hair.
- On the beach by the colonnade, put the cushion on the rocks and use the mallet on the rubber tree. Take the egg.
- At the windmill, take a pepper. Mega-Monkey: the door is locked and you cannot grip the blades yet; you come back with an umbrella.
- In the village (the strange lights), take the block of tofu, the auger and the measuring cup. Talk to Lemonhead. Extra: hover over his options repeatedly for "Pair of dimes?", and offer him the skin map ("Domingo's crispy flesh").
Hotel Goodsoup again
- In the bar and back room:
- Use the chisel on the cheese wheel in the back room for nacho cheese.
- Give Goodsoup the egg, the dog hair and the pepper. He gives you the Head-B-Clear bottle; open it with the chisel. Talk to him: the ring is in the Goodsoup crypt with his aunt, and the diamond is on Skull Island.
- Mega-Monkey: order a "big, fruity drink with an umbrella" for the umbrella. (Regular: the first drink always comes with one.)
- Take the empty jar (the tip jar) from the bar.
- Upstairs, in the left room, use the mallet on the nail. Outside the room, take the nail and, Mega-Monkey, the portrait (Guybrush discards the frame). The right room is locked.
- Mega-Monkey: in the inventory, use the scissors on the portrait to get its face and the portrait with a hole in it. In the bar, take the mirror and put the face in the empty mirror frame.
Volcano, lantern, lighthouse and compass
- At the windmill, Mega-Monkey: use the umbrella on the blades to ride to the top. Use the jar on the sugar-water barrel.
- In the village, make a tofu mask: use the chisel on the tofu, and if that does not work, the auger (guides split on the tool). Wear it. Lemonhead takes you to the volcano. After the ceremony, throw the nacho cheese into the volcano and the lava flows again.
- On the hotel patio, put the cheese in the cooking pot, take the pot to Haggis and take the lotion. Use the measuring cup on the sea water. Extra: try to pick up the sea water 25 times. The sources do not explain where this cheese comes from, or whether throwing the nacho cheese into the volcano uses it up. If you have no cheese left, the back-room cheese wheel is the only cheese source the route names.
- In the clearing, use the lotion on the cursed ring and pull it off. Punch air holes in the jar lid (guides name the chisel, the auger or the scissors; try each until one works), put the jar on the stump to catch fireflies, and close it with the lid: a firefly lantern.
- At the lighthouse, put the lantern on the post. Mega-Monkey: use your mirror on the broken mirror. (Regular: the mirror does not need replacing.)
- On the beach, the Flying Welshman (some guides: the Lost Welshman) needs a compass. Build it in the inventory: magnet + pin, then add the cork, then the cup of sea water. Give it to him.
The first death and the Goodsoup family
- First death. Order a drink, spike it with Head-B-Clear and drink it. You wake in a crypt. Use the chisel on your coffin and take the coffin nails, then chisel the middle coffin to free Stan, who gives you his business card.
- Upstairs at the hotel, the right room: Mega-Monkey: open it with Stan's laminated card. (Regular: it is not locked.) Pull down the Murphy bed and hold it down with the coffin nails and the nail. Take the Goodsoup family history book.
- Mega-Monkey: hang the holed portrait over the porthole on the left room's door, go inside and look through the porthole. Griswold sees a Goodsoup face. (Regular: you do not need to prove the family look.)
- In the bar, talk to Griswold Goodsoup and work through these lines. He accepts you into the family.
- "I thought if I died, I'd be buried with your aunt."
- "Uncle Griswold! It's me!…" (any name will do)
- Mega-Monkey: "Look at me! Don't I look just like a Goodsoup?"
- "I could just talk about Goodsoup history all day."
- In the cemetery, at Stan's new insurance office, buy life insurance and pay with the gold tooth. Extra: enter and leave Stan's crypt 35 times for The Dig's spider.
The second death
- Second death. Drink another spiked drink and wake in the Goodsoup crypt.
- Talk to the ghost bride, Minnie.
- Go left and take the crowbar from the coffin. Murray drops in; take him.
- Look through the crack and talk to Mort. Extra: the view through the crack is the old LucasArts game screen.
- Mega-Monkey: combine the paste and the skeleton arm, then use the sticky arm on Mort's lantern.
- Put the lantern on the coffin lid and use Murray on the lantern. Mort flees and the crypt opens.
- Extra: while you are around the crypts, wait outside for a cutscene and try the crypt kiss.
- Back at the hotel:
- In the back room, take the death certificate from the file cabinet (bottom drawer).
- In the upstairs right room, use the crowbar on the boarded hole, then on the bed. The skeleton is catapulted to his bride in the crypt.
- In the crypt, take the engagement band.
- Hand Stan the death certificate. He pays out "a lot of money".
Skull Island and the ring
- Get the Welshman to take you to Skull Island.
- Ask the winch operator, LaFoot, to lower you. He drops you: use the umbrella within about 3 seconds. If you miss, climb back up and try again. Extra: miss on purpose once for the extra dialogue.
- In the cave, tell King Andre: "I have got SO much money it's almost embarrassing." Give any name, then "Maybe we could make a deal" and "Sounds fun! Deal me in, baldy!". Extra: check his toys first.
- Play the 5 death tarot cards, five of a kind, and win the diamond.
- In the clearing, combine the diamond and the engagement band and put the ring on Elaine's finger. Part 4 ends.
11. Part 5 - Kiss of the Spider Monkey
Optional extras: 1 · Mega-Monkey extra steps: 2 · LeChuck's Carnival of the Damned
A cable car ride into LeChuck's amusement park, and a problem to solve once you are inside.
Warning. LeChuck's cable-car dialogue is a one-off. Exhaust every line before you end the conversation in step 1.
- In the cable car, talk to LeChuck and go through everything he has to say: it fills in series backstory. Ending the talk (picking the bottom option repeatedly does it) turns Guybrush into a child. Open the car door.
- At Dinghy Dog's stall, say "How can I win one of these fabulous prizes?", "Bet you can't guess how old I am." and "Give me that anchor!". Take the anchor: you need it whichever prize you pick.
- Mega-Monkey: combine the shaving cream and the pie pan into a fake pie and put the anchor in it. Put the heavy fake pie on the pie stack: the Wharf Rat's cannon knocks out the mime. (Regular: put the anchor straight on the meringue stack.)
- Open the gate and look through the hole. You get a pie in the face: meringue.
- Push Dinghy Dog until he bites you, then take the dog hair. Mega-Monkey: it takes more pushes than regular mode (guides say 6 or 7; regular, 3 or 4). Keep pushing until the bite.
- At the snow cone stand, take the pepper mill and ask for a plain snow cone. Add the meringue, the dog hair and pepper, then eat it. Guybrush is an adult again.
12. Part 6 - Guybrush Kicks Butt Once Again
Optional extras: 1 · Mega-Monkey extra steps: 1 · The roller coaster
The final ride: four stops, something to take or do at each. The track loops, so anything you miss can be picked up on the next lap, and if you dawdle LeChuck hurries you along.
- Get off at stop 1, the hanging scene, and take the rope.
- At stop 2, the pirate ship with the rum, take the keg o' rum.
- At stop 3, the lantern scene, take the flask of oil. Mega-Monkey: open the lantern, blow out the flame (the parrot icon), then take it. (Regular: the flask is ready to take.)
- At stop 4, the ice scene with the giant snow monkey, walk up and put the keg on the monkey's arm. Combine the oil and the rope, then attach the rope to the keg as a fuse. Walk back down.
- When LeChuck comes for you, use the pepper mill on him. That is the last puzzle. Extra: sit through the credits for the post-credits segment.
13. Regular vs Mega-Monkey - Every Difference
These are the additions behind the "Mega-Monkey extra steps" counts, mostly from Cindy Wells' per-part lists of regular-mode changes, with two from Tom Hayes. If you started on regular by mistake, this is what you skipped.
- Part 1: none.
- Part 2 (10): take the paste; look at the coat before taking the dandruff; open the pocket for the glove; pick up the paperweight (Tom Hayes); push Bill for the jawbreaker; maggots on the chicken for the club card; Blondebeard's frisk, so the helium gum trick and the pie pan for the tooth; the biscuit-cutter rubber plug and the paste to fix the rowboat; the light-panel sequence; a third banjo round of 6 strings (Tom Hayes).
- Part 3: none according to Cindy Wells; see §9's rules for the one dissenting source.
- Part 4 (9): Madame Xima's repeated readings for 5 cards; the maggoty biscuit instead of dog treats; asking for the umbrella drink; the locked windmill (umbrella on the blades); the locked skeleton room (Stan's card); proving the Goodsoup look (portrait over the porthole); the lighthouse mirror swap (face in the bar's mirror frame); paste on the skeleton arm for Mort's lantern; the shaving-cream bottle that does not open easily.
- Part 5 (2): the fake pie (shaving cream, pie pan, anchor); more pushes on Dinghy Dog.
- Part 6 (1): opening the lantern and blowing out the flame for the oil flask.

15. Accuracy & Sources
This walkthrough was written fresh for this site in October 2026 from the Steam store page and store data (AppID 730820), Steam's global achievement stats page, three Steam forum threads, TrueSteamAchievements, Exophase, PCGamingWiki, GOG's store page and Wikipedia, plus the walkthroughs of Kasey Chang (Mega Monkey, 2003), Cindy Wells, Tom Hayes (v1.1, 2008), King Broccoli, Saad Baig, Joonas Linkola, OutRider, Christine Cain, Stinger 3:16, Lu Richardson, DRaKeZ and Cyberly, and ScummBar's easter-egg list.
What is solid. No achievements: the store data, the store page, Steam's stats page, TrueSteamAchievements and PCGamingWiki all agree, and Exophase returned no page at the expected address. The Mega-Monkey route was cross-checked across four walkthroughs that cover that mode (Kasey Chang's and Cindy Wells' are written for it; Tom Hayes and King Broccoli add Mega-Monkey notes). All 16 pirate insult pairs appear in both Tom Hayes and Cindy Wells, and all 16 Rottingham insults in both Cindy Wells and Joonas Linkola.
Where sources disagreed, and what this guide did:
- Tofu-mask tool. Chisel (six walkthroughs) or auger (three). The route says chisel, then auger.
- Jar-lid holes. Chisel (five), auger (two) or scissors (two). Possibly several tools work; the route says try each.
- Dinghy Dog. Mega-Monkey: 6 pushes (four sources) or 7 (two). Regular: 3 or 4. The route says push until he bites.
- Mega-Monkey Part 3. Cindy Wells finds no difference. Kasey Chang says Mega-Monkey pirates know more insults and Rottingham needs at least four points. Not confirmed either way; learning all 16 comebacks covers both.
- Rottingham's win rule. Kasey Chang: three points, and one miss loses. Cyberly (read only through a summary): three valid comebacks in a row.
- Rottingham's insult count. 16 in Cindy Wells and Joonas Linkola, 15 in Tom Hayes (no "Nothing on this earth...") and King Broccoli (no "Your mother wears a toupee!"), 8 in Kasey Chang. The union of 16 is consistent. King Broccoli answers "My skills with a sword are highly venerated." with "Oh, that is so cliché!", which does not rhyme; the right answer is "Too bad they're all fabricated."
- Pirate insult lists. Joonas Linkola and King Broccoli each list 15 and Kasey Chang 14. Wording varies slightly: "fillet" or "filet", "sow on a buffet", "I'd rather be fumigated", "Your odor makes..." without "alone", "they suffocated" without "all", "until" for "'til", "I could if you use some breath spray". The lists here follow Tom Hayes.
- Banjo rounds. Tom Hayes gives 4 and 5 strings, plus a third round of 6 on Mega-Monkey; Cindy Wells gives three rounds of 4, 5 and 6. No source gives a fixed note order, so none is printed.
- Names. The lemonade seller is Kenny in three sources and Lenny in one; this guide uses Kenny. The ghost bride is Minnie in two sources and Millie in one; Minnie here. Kasey Chang also spells Van Helgen as Van Gelder, Geldar and Heldan, and Tom Hayes once calls Haggis "Hamish"; this guide uses Haggis McMutton, Edward Van Helgen and Cutthroat Bill. The Welshman appears as both the Flying Welshman and the Lost Welshman.
- Part titles. Part 1 also appears as "The Demise of LeChuck" and "The Demise of Pirate Zombie Le Chuck", Part 5 as "The Kiss of the Spider Monkey", Part 6 as "Guybrush Kicks Butt Again". The in-game title cards were not checked.
- Release dates. Wikipedia and PCGamingWiki give 11 November 1997 for the original; the Steam store page and GOG show 31 October 1997. The Steam release itself came out on 22 March 2018 (store data, PCGamingWiki, TrueSteamAchievements), though the store page displays the 1997 date.
- Single-source extras. The bridge's secret button, the donkey-head mask and ordering speaker, King Andre's toys, the crypt kiss, The Dig spider, Domingo's January greeting and the surge of new insults after a loss to Rottingham each come from one source. The ship-tier list, names and order, comes from Cindy Wells alone.
- Route gaps. No source says where you pick up the magic wand used on the magic hat in Part 2. In Part 4, no source explains where the cheese for the hotel's cooking pot comes from, or whether throwing the nacho cheese into the volcano uses it up; the back-room cheese wheel is the only cheese source the route names.
- Steam's ScummVM version. One forum post says the build is ScummVM 2.0.0 or a development build after it; unconfirmed.
- Not confirmed anywhere: whether the mode can be changed mid-game, the exact in-game wording of every insult, and the two Shift-key cheats. Exophase, SteamDB, SteamHunters, Completionist.me, the Fandom wiki, the ScummVM wiki and HowLongToBeat could not be read directly; the HowLongToBeat times come via GOG's page.
